Over the last several years, the treatment of epilepsy has been made more exciting with the arrival of several new medications. These give you and your physician options. Medication choice is strongly influenced by many factors, such as:
1)What other medical problems you have and what medications you take.
2)If you have additional neurological problems such as neuropathy or headaches. Many of the new medications are very beneficial to treat more than one problem.
3)If you have a desire to start a family.
4)Prior response to medications.
Although many general neurologists are very comfortable with the older medications, they may not feel that way about the newer treatment options. It is always a good idea for someone with epilepsy to have their medications and treatment options reviewed by someone with additional expertise.
